Virginia Falls

Itinerary for 3-night Lodge Accommodation Package Combined with Day Trip to Nahanni - Virginia Falls

We highly recommend a 3 night stay at the Northern Rockies Lodge so that your bush-pilot can fly you on the best possible day to Nahanni National Park.

Day 1 - Arrive at Muncho Lake
Check-in this afternoon at Northern Rockies Lodge, an impressive log building set on the shores of breathtakingly beautiful Muncho Lake. Our Lodge is known as the best stop on this section of the Alaska Highway and features all the amenities you require, including a full-service restaurant, cocktail lounge, sauna, and nearby hiking trails.

Day 2 – Visit Virginia Falls in Nahanni National Park
We board one of our comfortable floatplanes and depart the turquoise waters of Muncho Lake. Our northbound, 1.5 hour flight follows the famous Alaska Highway over BC’s remote northern Rockies before crossing the mighty Liard River. Witness the vastness of the southeastern Yukon and the rugged Mackenzie Mountains as we enter Canada’s Northwest Territories. We follow the Caribou Range, cross the Flat River near Albert Faille’s trap line cabin (http://www.nfb.ca/film/Nahanni) before reaching the south Nahanni River. All of our floatplanes feature panoramic windows which allow you unprecedented views of the wild countryside below.

There are two trails leading to Virginia Falls viewpoints from the floatplane docks. Frequently a Parks Canada interpreter is on hand to provide information on the Nahanni, the native history, early explorers, and plant life in the area. We enjoy an leisurely stroll (30 min.) along the well maintained boardwalk to the upper viewpoint. The roaring cataract is an unbeatable backdrop as you enjoy a picnic lunch (provided by us) while sitting on one of the park benches savoring the sights of Virginia Falls. The more challenging portage trail descends to the bottom of Virginia Falls.

Back at the docks you board our well maintained floatplane and take your window seat to enjoy a short flight up the South Nahanni River to Glacier Lake (extended tour option). After absorbing the magnitude of the Cirque of the Unclimables we leave Nahanni National Park in the Mackenzie Mountains to return to Muncho Lake in the Rocky Mountains.

Day 3 - Relax at Muncho Lake or visit the nearby Liard River Hot Springs
Today there is plenty of time for you to enjoy a leisurely time canoeing on Muncho Lake. You can also hike on nearby trails and backroads, or drive to the Liard River Hot Springs where you enjoy the warm, sulphurous waters surrounded by lush vegetation.

Day 4 - Depart from Muncho Lake
Today you depart over the historic Alaska Highway from the Northern Rockies Lodge, having experienced the most memorable adventure in Canada’s north.

When to visit:

  • During May and June enjoy the beautiful spring in the North.
  • During the summer (late June to mid-August) enjoy the warmest weather and almost 24 hours of daylight as we are near the “land of the Midnight Sun”.
  • From mid-August to early October enjoy fall colors in the mountains and great opportunities to view the Northern Lights.
